Based on a tip-off, a team of forest personnel carried out a search in Thiruthiyamalai Ayyampalayam village and nabbed the accused, identified as Selvaraj, 46 and Manohar, 37.

They were produced in Trichy district court which remanded them in judicial custody till November 4. “We chose to get them remanded, instead of imposing a fine on them, as we want to send a strong message to people indulging in poaching,” district forest officer D Sujatha told TOI.

Search was on for their accomplices, Ramesh, 33 and Kumar 37.

“The accused seemed to have been indulging in poaching for a long time. We recovered big butcher knives from them,” said the official.
