Trichy: The Trichy-Singapore sector registered its highest-ever air traffic in December with 45,796 passengers flying in both directions. This makes up about 40% of the overall international passenger traffic of Trichy airport, according to airport authorities. However, due to the recent restrictions imposed by India on passengers coming from Singapore following the spread of Covid-19 in China, the traffic growth may face a slight decline, say travel agents.
Despite the Covid-19 restrictions in place for more than two years since March 2020, Trichy-Singapore was the only sector that witnessed busy traffic among international sectors in Trichy airport. The airport handled about 1.25 lakh passengers in the sector in the two years of the pandemic, one of the highest in the country. In all, 615 arrivals and 618 departures were handled between Trichy-Singapore-Trichy as on March 15, 2022.
Scoot Air (14),
Air India Express and IndiGo Air (7 each) altogether operate 28 services in the sector. Next to Singapore is Trichy - Kuala Lumpur sector with 27 services. All three airlines in the Singapore sector utilized about 87.15% of seats during December, the data says. Trichy-Kuala Lumpur was the busiest sector during pre-Covid time handling around 48,000 passengers during December 2019 with 35 services a week. Travel agents said Singapore has recovered faster after easing of restrictions and is poised for growth. Meanwhile, the recent restrictions mandating passengers arriving from Singapore to have an RT-PCR test have brought down traffic slightly.
K Mythili, an IT professional in Singapore and native of Namakkal, said that working class travellers are unable to spend Rs 4,000 to get the test.
“Due to heavy traffic, passengers find it difficult to pay huge fares in this sector. To help regular travellers, additional flights should be operated to lower fares,” she added. Meanwhile, Government of India has given relaxations from RT-PCR test to transit passengers who need not get access to Singapore immigration.
