Trichy: Police arrested nine ganja peddlers, including two women, and seized at least 3.6kg of the contraband in a special drive to combat drugs in Trichy city on Sunday.
A team comprising 130 police officers conducted searches across the city on Sunday. Edamalaipattipudhur police seized a total of 2.55kg of ganja near a graveyard and a public toilet at Mill Colony in Ramji Nagar. They arrested G Priya, 47, and K Loga Deepika, 28, in connetion with the seizure near the graveyard. Another peddler Arumugam managed evade arrest.
Fort police arrested R Sathishkumar, 29, from Mela Chinthamani, and R Dinesh, 19, while Gandhi market police arrested V Dineshkumar, 21. Similarly, Palakkarai police arrested A Alwin, 21, from Muthaliyar Chathiram, and S Mariya Simon, 24, from Palakkarai while Thillai Nagar police also arrested S Suriya Lakshmipathi, 19, from Vaamadam.
Police also conducted searches in men hostels in Woraiyur and Cantonment areas. They seized 1.1kg of ganja and 1.6 lakh from S Sivaprasath, 23, a history-sheeter, at a mansion on Keeraikollai Street.
Police also found two men with possession of unaccounted cash of 33 lakh in one of the mansions. They handed over the men and the cash to the income tax department.
