Trichy: The state govt has notified extension of tenure for the vice-chancellor (VC) search committee of Tamil University in Thanjavur till May 31. The Tamil development and information department, issued a govt order (GO) on Feb 27 in this regard.
Sources told TOI on Tuesday evening that a meeting of the panel members was under way to finalise the list of shortlisted VC candidates to be interviewed and fix a date.

"There are deliberations about fixing an interview date in a way it may not be affected by the election code of conduct," a source said. The panel includes justice K B K Vasuki, retired judge of the Madras high court; retired IAS officer K Deenabandhu; professor M Selvam; former VC of Periyar University M Thangaraju; and professor M Rajendran.
The panel's constitution is without a UGC nominee.
In the communication, the govt said the constitution of the committee had not been stayed and cited the Supreme Court's recent order of Feb 4, which set aside the Madras high court's stay on VC appointments and remitted the matter back to the high court for fresh hearing.
