ARIYALUR: The industries department is to focus on Ariyalur and Perambalur districts, that are among the bottom five districts in human development index (HDI) and gross district domestic product (GDDP), to make them non-leather footwear production hubs. While Ariyalur is to get its maiden industrial park in about 130 acre within which a Taiwanese shoe company has committed to develop a production unit, Perambalur's non-leather footwear hub is heading for expansion within a year of its launch.
The HDI report of the state planning commission in 2017 ranked Perambalur (0.4 HDI) and Ariyalur (0.2 HDI) as 31 and 32, the last two among districts. Similarly, the planning commission's report on 'regional growth pattern in Tamil Nadu' in March categorised both districts with low GDDP.
"The investments will definitely contribute to economic growth of the two districts. Presently, people are migrating for jobs, that pattern would slow down. Industries making early investments shall also benefit in maintaining a high retention rate of employees," Chella Ramaswamy, chairman, CII Trichy zone, said.
Sipcot sources said the non-leather footwear hub will be the focus sector of both Ariyalur and Perambalur districts capable of meeting the requirement to offer a workforce in bulk, mostly women in footwear production.
