Sports meet held to mark Tamil Nadu golden jubilee

TRICHY: As a part of the golden jubilee of renaming the erstwhile Madras State as Tamil Nadu, the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) organised a district-level sports meet in Trichy on Thursday.
District collector, K Rajamani, minister for tourism, Vellamandi N Natarajan and minister for backward classes and minority welfare, S Valarmathi, flagged off the competition, which was held at Anna Stadium.

A total of 110 sports persons – below 21 years of age – participated in three athletic events: 100m running, long jump and high jump. While the winners received cash prize of Rs 2,500, those who finished second and third received cash prize of Rs 1,500 and Rs 1,000 respectively.
District sports officer, C Punniyamoorthy, said that the event served as a launching pad for the winners and runners as they are now eligible to participate in state-level tournament.
The winners among men included M Anandha Krishnan (100m running) from National College, R Nithish Kumar (long jump) from sports hostel and D Gailley Vinister (high jump) from St Joseph's College. Among women, S Dhanalakshmi (100m running) from Seethalakshmi Ramasamy College, K Vemabarasi (long jump) from National College and R Emimal Beula (high jump) from National College were the winners.
The athletes at the state-level meet, which is set to be held in Chennai on July 23, would receive a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and four grams of gold, while the runners-up and the second runners-up would receive cash prize of Rs 25,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively apart from 4 grams of gold.
