Sports meet held to mark Tamil Nadu golden jubilee
TRICHY: As a part of the golden jubilee of renaming the erstwhile Madras State as Tamil Nadu, the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) organised a district-level
District collector, K Rajamani, minister for tourism, Vellamandi N Natarajan and minister for backward classes and minority welfare, S Valarmathi, flagged off the competition, which was held at Anna Stadium.
A total of 110 sports persons – below 21 years of age – participated in three athletic events: 100m running,
District sports officer, C Punniyamoorthy, said that the event served as a launching pad for the winners and runners as they are now eligible to participate in state-level tournament.
The winners among men included M Anandha Krishnan (100m running) from National College, R Nithish Kumar (long jump) from sports hostel and D Gailley Vinister (high jump) from St Joseph's College. Among women, S Dhanalakshmi (100m running) from Seethalakshmi Ramasamy College, K Vemabarasi (long jump) from National College and R Emimal Beula (high jump) from National College were the winners.
The athletes at the state-level meet, which is set to be held in Chennai on July 23, would receive a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and four grams of gold, while the runners-up and the second runners-up would receive cash prize of Rs 25,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively apart from 4 grams of gold.
