The couple has no children and he has been running a snack shop selling bajji, vada and sweets. During lockdown, he was forced to shut shop and borrow money to make ends meet. He also got addicted to alcohol that he could not resume his business even after the lockdown was lifted.

S Ramadoss, inspector of Thanjavur East station, said the man stole a mini truck in Ammapettai and iron rods and other materials used for welding from a workshop. This was followed by two bikes and later rice, dhal, sugar, pulses and oil from ration shops. He broke open the shutters of three ration shops at North Street,

Kokkeri

and Marur and carried the food items on the stolen mini truck to sell them. Inspector Ramadoss said it was during a vehicle check that Suresh fell into their net with the mini-truck loaded with a gas cylinder and equipment to cut shutters.
