Thanthonimalai police investigated into the matter based on a direction from the judicial magistrate court I in Karur on a petition filed by advocate R Rajendran. In the first information report (FIR), police noted that Seeman sang a song with a derogatory sentence denoting a caste name with an alleged intent to insult Karunanidhi. He was charged with intentionally insulting with the intent to provoke a breach of public peace under the sections of BNSS.

Seeman made the remarks in support of NTK functionary ‘Saattai' Duraimurugan, during his visit to Karur on Aug 4. Earlier, police booked Duraimurugan for singing the alleged defamatory song on Karunanidhi in Trichy district. At Karur, Seeman said, "I will also sing the same song and see what police will do" and sang the song.

On Aug 5, petitioner Rajendran submitted a complaint with the district collector seeking action against Seeman. Subsequently on Aug 14, he filed a complaint with Thanthonimalai police and the office of the superintendent of police over the issue. Due to inaction, he approached the court on Aug 19 seeking a direction to police to file a case against Seeman. On Oct 14, the court directed police to investigate the issue and take action. Following a probe, police filed the case on Thursday.
