Vermicomposting is a method used to convert organic waste naturally into manure using earthworms inside a closed pit. For the past six months, the recycling facility has been producing vermicompost to meet the needs of green cover on the SBI campus.

As there is a surplus vermicompost production now, SBI launched the sales of soil nutrient-rich manure at the rate of Rs 20 per kg.

“Previously, we were burning the organic waste. This practice has been completely eliminated ever since we started recycling organic waste generated on the 7.50acre campus,” P Ravindran, assistant general manager, SBI Trichy said.

Trichy Corporation

said that the production facility would be utilised as a model to encourage other government and private establishments producing more than 50kg of waste per day to recycle their waste on own instead of depending on the civic body.
