Trichy: The Trichy railway division has opened a rail coach restaurant at Thanjavur Junction. This is the second such facility in the division.
Divisional railway manager Balak Ram Negi inaugurated the restaurant, ‘Railadi Subbaiyah's Tiffin', on Friday. The division's first rail coach restaurant was opened outside the Rail Museum next to Trichy Railway Junction in Oct 2024.
A rail coach, having reached the end of its codal life, has been repurposed into a pure vegetarian restaurant. The air-conditioned facility boasts heritage-inspired interior design. An official said the initiative merges traditional aesthetics with modern amenities, delivering a distinctive and enjoyable dining experience for the public.
The operating contract for the restaurant has been granted to Jothi Snacks, Thanjavur, for five years. The project is anticipated to contribute considerable non-fare revenue to the railways.
Meanwhile, work is underway to set up rail coach restaurants in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam. The division is also planning similar facilities at key stations including Trichy Fort and Villupuram.
Senior divisional commercial manager Rathi Priya and branch officers were present during the inauguration.
