Trichy: Police launched an investigation after a charred body of man was found in a car in Thiruverumbur here on Tuesday. His body was spotted by passersby after they noticed a car apparently abandoned on the road to Pappakurichi in Thiruverumbur on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Abbas Ali, 38, from Fathimapuram in Kattur near Thiruverumbur in Trichy.
He was survived by his wife and a son. The car was seen locked with full of smoke inside. As a man identified car owner Kulam Thaskeer, who is the father of the deceased, he called in the family.
Both the owner and his family members then rushed to the spot and reported the incident to the Thiruverumbur police. The police opened the car and found the charred body of Abbas Ali. On seeing his body, his family members were left shell-shocked. The interior of the car was also burnt to an extent.
The police conducted preliminary enquiry with the family members. It was found that Abbas Ali owned a car and ran call taxi service. He left the home around 3 am on Monday with the car but he did not return home. The police found an empty container of 5 litres and a lighter inside the car. It was suspected that kerosene was kept in the can.
The police are checking whether he has committed suicide or anyone burnt him alive before bundling him into the car. Forensic experts also reached the spot to collect details, police said. Going by the preliminary findings, it looked like a suicide. The body was sent to Mahatma Gandhi memorial government hospital for post-mortem. Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) took up the issue and staged a blockade inside Mahatma Gandhi memorial government hospital (MGMGH) alleging that it was a murder.
