Trichy: The body of a stillborn baby floating in a
sewage canal in Thuvarankurichi
town on the outskirts of Trichy prompted the district administration to form a team to probe the incident on Monday. The Thuvarankurichi police is also investigating the matter.
A passerby spotted an object resembling a baby toy in a sewage canal near
Church Complex
in Thuvarankurichi on Monday morning. On taking a closer look, he found it was a stillborn baby. As the news spread, a huge crowd gathered there to see the body.
The Thuravarunkurichi police were notified and they rushed to the spot. They recovered the body of a male infant. The news reached Trichy district collector Dr KS Palanisamy and the state health department. The collector formed a team headed by joint director of health services (JDHS)
Dr S Soundararajan
to probe the matter. The health department team visited the spot before which the body was removed and taken for post-mortem by the police.
"It was a premature baby," said JDHS Dr Soundararajan.
The Thuvarankurichi police registered a case based on the complaint from the local village administrative officer (VAO).
Sources suspect it is a baby born out of wedlock. They also suspect that the hospital colluded with the mother, performing a C-section to retrieve the baby. Thus, police are also turning their needle of suspicion towards the hospitals who were infamous for such procedures.
