Pocso case: Man gets 20 years in jail

Trichy: The Mayiladuthurai district and sessions court on Tuesday sentenced a 25-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl. Police said T Sanjeevi from a village near Mayiladuthurai sexually assaulted the Class VIII girl and threatened her with dire consequences five years ago.The ordeal came to light after the girl became pregnant. Following a complaint from the girl's parents, police registered a case under Section 6 of Pocso Act and Section 506-2 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested Sanjeevi. Public prosecutor R Seyon represented the state. Judge R Vijayakumari found the accused guilty and sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the sexual assault and seven years of imprisonment for criminal intimidation. The judge ordered the accused to undergo the sentences concurrently. She also imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000 for each offence.Sanjeevi was lodged at Cuddalore central prison. Mayiladuthurai superintendent of police G Stalin lauded the police and prosecution team for the conviction.
