Trichy: Functionaries of PMK staged demonstration in front of the collectorate over the death of a farmer, in Ariyalur on Thursday. They alleged that the man was assaulted by police during an inquiry at his house.
According to sources, Purushothaman of Thanjavur district had come to Kasangottai for a family function on November 24. However, he was stopped and confronted by local villagers identified as Vallavan, Ravi, Arunkumar and Rajadurai, who belonged to a different caste. Purushothaman lodged a police complaint and on November 25, a team of police personnel visited the house of Arunkumar. As he was not at home, police inquired his father-in-law Sembulingam, a farmer. An argument erupted between his family and police during which police allegedly assaulted Sembulingam. He died at a hospital on Thursday.
PMK cadre staged protest, seeking compensation for the deceased man’s family. tnn
