CHENNAI: The alumni of National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Trichy have come forward to set up research chairs with a corpus fund of Rs 5 crore. Besides this, they have also pledged to upgrade the running track and set up a heritage centre within the campus.

NIT Trichy, founded as Regional Engineering College in 1964, will set up chairs across the ten core engineering streams with the alumni funds. “We will fund 10 research scholars every year with the corpus. We also saw that the existing running track is the same that existed when the college was set up. Therefore, we have decided to upgrade the running track with synthetic turf, a football ground and a stadium at a cost of Rs 6.2 crore,” said Krishna Sai, president, RECAL or REC/NIT Alumni Association.

The alumni will also fund the creation of a heritage centre within the campus spread across 5,000 square feet at a cost of Rs 40 lakh.

More than 2,000 alumni from the engineering college will meet in Chennai on January 4 as part of their annual meeting, Sai said.
