Motorist killed after being hit by truck carrying illegal sand

TRICHY: A 45-year-old man was killed when a truck, which was transporting sand illegally hit his vehicle near Thuvakudi in Trichy on Sunday night.

and his wife Rajeswari, 40, were returning home from

Thuakudi

when they were hit by a mini truck on the Thirunedungulam Road. While Manivel died on the spot, Rajeswari suffered serious injuries and is battling for life in a hospital.

Locals gathered at the spot and protested saying that illegal sand mining cost the life of the motorist.

His relatives and locals refused to accept the body after postmortem. They charged the officials of turning a blind eye towards illegal sand mining in the area. After police assured to take action, they agreed to receive the body.

The driver of the vehicle who fled the scene after leaving behind the vehicle was caught on Monday. Haroondass, 43, of Thirunedungulam was arrested for causing death by negligence and rash driving and remanded in judicial custody.

Police said that the driver took the sand from an irrigation canal near Valiampatti area and tried to escape at a high speed leading to the accident.
