Man kills mother-in-law, assaults wife

Trichy: A 75-year-old woman was killed allegedly by her son-in-law during a domestic dispute near Mayiladuthurai on Monday. Police said the man also attacked his wife, who suffered critical injuries. Police are searching for the suspect, who escaped from the scene after the incident.Police identified the accused as P Panneerselvam, 60, a daily wage labourer from Komal village in Mayiladuthurai district. The dispute began with his 45-year-old wife, Baby Rani, at her mother's house in Kandamangalam village.In the altercation, Panneerselvam allegedly hit Baby Rani on the head with a spade handle, causing serious injuries. When her mother Vasantha tried to intervene, he attacked her as well. Vasantha died at the spot, police said.Hearing the cries, neighbours hurried to the spot, but Panneerselvam had already fled. Baby Rani was admitted to Mayiladuthurai Government Hospital, where she is being treated at the ICU.The Palaiyur police retrieved Vasantha's body and sent it to Government Tiruvarur Medical College Hospital for postmortem. A case has been filed against Panneerselvam under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 101 (murder), 109 (attempt to murder), 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 118 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons).
