Man found dead in Samayapuram police station restroom
TRICHY: A 44-year-old man, who was nabbed in connection with a mobile snatching incident, was found dead in a restroom at Samayapuram police station in Trichy district of Tamil Nadu on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as A Muruganandham of Oriyur in Ariyalur district.
Trichy district superintendent of police Sujitkumar visited the station and checked the body and CCTV footages. “Preliminary inquiries suggest that it is a custodial suicide. He used a waist thread to hang himself,” the SP told TOI.
Asked if the waist thread was strong enough for one to commit suicide, the SP said he had seen the body hanging from the waist thread.
The Samayapuram police registered a case under the section 176 of the CrPC.
Muruganandham was caught red-handed when he was attempting to snatch a mobile from a devotee on the Samayapuram Mariamman temple premises in the early hours of Monday. He was handed over to the police.
The police took him to the station for inquiry. “The police officers on duty made him sit at the station. He drank water and used the restroom for a few times. He did not come out of the restroom after 8.45am. The police at the station were not bothered about him. Later, they found him missing and searched for him in the restroom where he was found dead,” SP told TOI.
Muruganandham was a drunkard. He separated from his wife and children. He was also accused of murdering his mother. The case was pending in Ariyalur district.
A judicial magistrate would conduct an inquiry.
