TRICHY: A 30-year-old man was arrested on Thursday on charges of raping and criminally intimidating a 23-year-old woman near Viswas Nagar on Wednesday night.
The incident came to light when the woman, who was bleeding, was found seeking help from passersby near Viswas Nagar. On getting the information, the Gandhi Market police rushed to the spot and rescued her.
During inquiry, the woman told police that an unidentified man forcefully took her away from near the Central bus stand in his autorickshaw.
He then raped her in a mini truck parked in front of a godown in the first cross street in Viswas Nagar. After raping her, he escaped. The woman managed to reach the main road.
With the available information, police swung into action. They inquired with the locals to ascertain the identity of the accused. They also managed to collect the CCTV footage from various places in the area. Sources said that footage from the surveillance cameras exposed the identity of the accused on Thursday.
On confirming his identity, the all women police station (AWPS), Fort arrested him late on Thursday and remanded in judicial custody. The woman has been admitted to the Mahatma Gandhi memorial government hospital (MGMGH) for treatment.
