Kollankulam cleared of garbage; tiles may be laid around pond

As many as 125 students Srimad Andavan College, workers from the Trichy Corporation and general public undertook a cleaning work at the Kollankulam in Edamalaipattipudhur area in Trichy on Saturday and removed plastic garbage floating in the waterbody.

TRICHY: As many as 125 students Srimad Andavan College, workers from the Trichy Corporation and general public undertook a cleaning work at the Kollankulam in Edamalaipattipudhur area in Trichy on Saturday and removed plastic garbage floating in the waterbody.
The three-hour programme was jointly organised by the corporation, VOICE Trust and Bhumi team.

The team deployed two earthmovers to load the collected garbage in two trucks.
The organisers said that the littering of Kollankulam by the people in the area polluted the waterbody which has been serving as the source to recharge the groundwater level in the area.
Appealing to the people in the area, the organisers advised the people not to dump any waste in the waterbody and keep it clean.
Considering the demand from the organisers and the people, assistant commissioner S N Shanmugam of corporation assured to take steps to lay tiles around the Kollankulam.
The organisers also planted 10 saplings on the western side of the pond. MR Palayam forest extension division gave seedlings.
