TRICHY: Forest rangers from Himachal Pradesh (HP) visited the elephant rescue and rehabilitation centre (ERRC) at MR Palayam in Trichy on Saturday where they were explained about the objectives of the centre. The 43 forest rangers are visiting Tamil Nadu as a part of their 18-month course,

Forest range officer (FRO), ERRC, V P Subramaniam and other officials interacted with the visitors and shared their experience in giving care and protection to the jumbos in ERRC. Tamil Nadu forest department also has ERRCs in Anamalai and Mudhumalai.

The ERRC at MR Palayam accommodates nine captive elephants. The visitors learned about the routine of the captive elephants. They also got to know about the diet plans of the elephants, waking regiment, disease, treatment protocols etc. Subramaniam said that the ERRC in two other places have been dealing with the rescue of wild elephants while the one in Trichy handles the rescue and rehabilitation of captive elephants.
