TRICHY: A 35-year-old man was caught by the customs officials at the Trichy airport on Friday for trying to smuggle 994g of gold, estimated to be worth over Rs 25 lakh, from Malaysia. According to customs officials, the passenger Yasir Arafat, a resident of Ramanathapuram, came in a Malindo Air flight from Malaysia. He was hiding the smuggled baggage in electronic goods and had somehow passed the scanner.
However, the officials suspected him since he was walking in a weird fashion. The officials soon caught him. During interrogation, he spilled the information about the gold. He was booked for smuggling gold and the seized goods were sent to the court. It will be deposited with the central exchequer.
