TRICHY: A surprise search conducted by prison officials in Trichy central prison brought to light the use of mobile phones and ganja by inmates.
Acting on a complaint from the prison department, Trichy city police booked cases against the prisoners on Monday and seized the phone and the contraband.
On Sunday afternoon, prison officer Shamugasundaram conducted a check at room no: 31 of the central prison where S Vellai Raja alias Aravind, 25, of Dindigul was lodged.

The officer found a cell phone with a SIM card and battery in his anus. He seized them and lodged a complaint with KK Nagar police in Trichy city on Monday. Police booked a case against Vellai Raja under the sections of the Prisoners Act.
The prison officer, who also searched the high protection volume number 2 at the prison, seized 30g of ganja from the anus of prisoner M Vignesh, 22, of Sowrashtra Colony in Madurai. Police booked him under the sections of the Prisoners Act and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The search was also extended to the water tank near volume number 1 at the prison in the evening. The prison officer seized 15 grams and 5g of ganja from S Mukilan alias Ravi, 24, of Thirubuvanam in Sivagangai and K Laden Doss, 25, of West Bengal. Both of them were booked under the Prisoners Act and NDPS Act, 1985.
