Trichy: Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat), formerly Nehru Yuva Kendra and functioning under the Union ministry of sports and youth affairs, has initiated steps to revive its abandoned youth hostel in Khajamalai near the district sports complex. A fresh detailed project report (DPR) has been prepared to redevelop the facility and reopen it for students and sportspersons visiting the city. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has inspected the hostel on Racecourse Road and is preparing a cost estimate for renovation. Officials said the building has remained locked since 2021 and suffers from severe maintenance issues, including seepage, requiring structural repairs and strengthening.

MY Bharat officials said an earlier proposal seeking Rs 90 lakh for repairs was submitted to the Union sports ministry in 2022, but the ministry asked the district unit to revise the estimate to within the Rs 20 lakh cap for youth hostel repairs. A revised proposal was sent in 2024, but renovation work has not begun so far. Trichy MP Durai Vaiko, who inspected the facility, said he would urge the Union ministry to allocate additional funds for a comprehensive overhaul so that students travelling to the city for exams and academic activities can benefit from low-cost accommodation. The hostel, built on land provided by the state government, offers basic facilities including a canteen and dining area and can accommodate youths under 35 years at nominal charges.
