have arrested five people including a retired sub-inspector of police for attacking social activist Thirukumaran, 40 with weapons on Wednesday.


The arrested have been identified as Vidyaraniyan (retired sub-inspector of police), Raj Kumar, Radhakrishnan,

Balasubramani

and Karthikeyan. They have been booked under sections 294(b) verbal abuse, 323 for voluntarily causing hurt and 324 causing hurt by dangerous weapons.

Thirukumaran had lodged a

complaint

with the Vangal police station against the accused for attempting to illegally mine sand from Cauvery river near Manmangalam.

The arrested persons came to know about Thirukumaran’s complaint and attacked him with a machete on Tuesday morning. He sustained injuries on the neck and head and was admitted to the Karur government hospital for treatment.

Based on his complaint, police arrested all the four accused and lodged them in Trichy central prison.
