Trichy: A massive fire broke out in the godown of an old tyre retreading company near Palpannai in Trichy in the early hours of Wednesday. Firefighters battled the blaze for around six hours before bringing it under control and fully extinguishing it. Goods valued at several lakhs of rupees were reportedly destroyed in the incident.
The company is located near a private hospital along Trichy-Chennai National Highway. Around 3.30am, thick black smoke suddenly began emerging from the godown. Within minutes, intense flames gripped the building. The fire consumed the tyres, sending a thick plume of black smoke into the sky. Nearby residents immediately notified the fire department.
Fire personnel from the Trichy station, led by district assistant fire Officer S Leo Joseph, rushed in and initially used one water tender to douse the flames. As the situation remained uncontrolled, additional fire engines were summoned from Thiruverumbur and Srirangam.
Trichy corporation also dispatched five water tankers to assist in the operation. More than 50 fire personnel, supported by five water tender trucks, fought the intense blaze. After nearly six hours of continuous effort, the fire was extinguished around 10am. Lakhs of rupees worth of old and recycled tyres stored in the godown were completely burnt in the incident.
