This is the first time that Poompuhar is holding an exhibition exclusively for handicrafts that have GI tags, Poompuhar manager K Arun said.

A geographical indication is a sign used on products that correspond to a specific geographical location or origin. This tag is issued by the geographical indication registry under the department of industry promotion and internal trade, ministry of commerce and industry.

"Poompuhar is organizing the exhibition exclusively for the GI tag handicrafts to help hundreds of artisans by creating marketing avenues for them," Arun said.

Thanjavur Corporation commissioner P Janaki Raveendran inaugurated the exhibition. The exhibition will go on till February 28.
