Excited first-timers looking for ‘change’

Karur/Trichy/Madurai: The queues were long and the heat relentless — but none of it seemed to deter first-time voters who made their way to polling stations right from the word go. At many booths across the state, youngsters arrived as early as 6.30am. "I have always wanted to vote ever since I saw my mother with ink on her finger, and now that I finally have that mark on mine, it feels like my voice matters," said B Sharmila, 19, who cast her vote in Karur. Her mother added that though she had her own political choice, she did not impose it on her daughter. P Monisha, 20, said she had travelled from Thiruchengode, where she is studying, to vote in Karur. "I was nervous, but once I went in, officials guided me through the process. It took me a while to understand how to use the EVMs, but I was happy because I know my vote will count," she said. "We have seen the problems the city and the state faced over many years, and we hope that our votes will help bring about change and improve our lives," said P Aashika, a resident of Sammatipuram in Madurai. While she was advised by her parents on which party to vote for, she said she had made up her mind who to vote for. W Arshu Safora from Iyer Bungalow said she felt good and excited to vote for the first time. "I selected a candidate who promised to improve better infrastructure for my constituency," she said.Several youngsters in Trichy and Karur turned up at polling stations dressed in white shirts and cream trousers — a look popularised during the campaign season by Vijay. "We need change. Sachin Tendulkar became what he is because he was given a chance," said Krishnamoorthy K, 22. In Karur, while these youngsters were not making their choices open, DMK cadre were going the extra mile to prevent any silent shift in voting. "We are making it doubly sure that our younger family members don't gravitate towards Vijay, as many of them are also his fans," said a DMK worker. However, there were also first-time voters who supported DMK and AIADMK, citing their experience in governance. "How can we trust an inexperienced lot to manage ministries and governance," said N Srikanth, 21. In Madurai South at Sourashtra HSS, many transgender people voted for the first time. "The transgender community demands to be treated equally and given support and access to basic infrastructure," said Maya.
