DMK bets on Palanisamy, Boopathy again for Aravakurichi, Thanjavur

TRICHY : DMK on Friday announced the candidacy of KC Palanisamy, 81, and Dr Anjugam Boopathy, 29, for

Aravakurichi

and

Thanjavur

constituencies respectively. Thus, like AIADMK, the opposition party also chose the previous candidates for the two constituencies where the election commission of India countermanded the election following rampant cash distribution for votes in May.

The incumbent MLA of Aravakurichi constituency will once again take on AIADMK's V Senthil Balaji, the former transport minister. Known for his packing material business in Karur, Palanisamy was keen to prove his strength despite his old age for the second time in the constituency, which was won by both the AIADMK and DMK several times. While Palanisamy contests to retain the constituency, Senthil Balaji is desperate to regain his lost glory following his removal as the transport minister and party's district secretary of Karur in 2015 by chief minister J Jayalalithaa.

Aravakurichi was the first constituency that came under the lens of the election commission over allegations of distribution of cash. Thanjavur constituency was the second one to face the wrath of EC. It cancelled the election a few days before the poll date of May 16.

The cancellation of election came as a shock to Anjugam Boopathy, an unmarried gynaecologist. However, DMK has given her another chance to contest. Daughter of DMK's former municipality vice-chairman Boopathy, Anjugam will take on AIADMK's incumbent MLA M Rengasamy. She expressed confidence that she could win by campaigning about the poor performance of AIADMK. "In the past six months, there was no significant development in the state. We will point out their poor performance and seek vote for us," Anjugam told TOI.
