Denied cash for booze, man kills mother

Trichy: A 46-year-old man beat his mother to death for refusing to give him money for buying liquor, near Ariyalur on Friday. The incident took place in Kallathur South Street near Jeyamkondam where the victim Manimegalai, 65, was living with her son Pughalendi.
According to the police, a verbal duel between the duo turned into a scuffle and he started to beat his mother.Pughalendi who was in an inebriated state attacked his mother with a wooden log. Manimegalai collapsed with grievous injures.
The neighbours who rushed to his house after hearing Manimegalai's cry informed Jeyamkondam police over the incident. Manimegalai succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital.
Locals said that the accused was married for over 15 years and his wife left him a few months over his alcohol addiction. She also took three of their children and currently lives with her parents.
Manimegalai was meeting her daily needs with the rent collected from the tenants living in two of her houses in Jeyamkondam and one in Trichy.
Pughalendi is also learned to have been collecting rent and consumed liquor with the money without the knowledge of his mother. However, on Friday, his mother had got the rent from the tenants before he could approach them. This resulted in the argument between the two.
Pughalendi was later arrested and Jeyamkondam police registered a case under section 302 of IPC against him for beating his mother to death.
