MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Saturday demanded the state government to declare the Cauvery delta areas as protected agriculture zone in the next assembly session. Attending the day-long hunger strike against the proposed exploration of shale gas in Thanjavur, the MDMK leader said the central government put on hold the exploration for namesake. He raised apprehensions that the fertile lands will turn into a desert due to the 634 types of chemicals used in the exploration of shale gas.

Review meeting on computerisation: The principal secretary of the civil supplies and consumer protection department and its commissioner, S Gopalakrishnan, on Saturday held a review meeting with the officials including Trichy district collector KS Palanisamy in connection with the computerisation of billing at ration shops in the district.

All the 7,83,493 ration cards have been linked to the computerised system of billing in 1,211 fair price shops for paperless transaction. Aadhaar numbers are also being collected for providing smart cards, officials said.

Guru Poornima Festival from today: Shirdi Sri Thayumana Saibaba Seva Project will celebrate 'Guru Poornima Festival' from July 17 to 19 at Garbha Ratchagi Mahal in Cantonment in Trichy. The celebration is meant to enlighten on the teacher-student relationship. The exhibition will have nearly 108 gurujis and their preachings in the form of posters.

A copper coin carrying engravings of Lord Rama, Seetha and Hanuman worshipped by Shirdi Saibaba will be displayed on July 18. There will also be an oratorical and essay competition for school students on July 17 between 11am and 3pm, said one of the trustees, Jayam Kannan.
