Crocodile strays into residential area, rescued

Trichy: Forest department personnel on Friday rescued a crocodile strayed into a residential area near Thindukkurai here and released it in a waterbody away from the human settlements.
The district forest unit received a distress call from villagers who spotted a medium-sized crocodile close to Mukkombu barrage across the Cauvery.
A team of forest officials including assistant conservators of forest R Saravanakumar and Khader Basha rushed to Thindukkarai. Animal welfare activist G Ramakrishnan accompanied the team. They spotted the crocodile in bushes and rescued it.
"The freshwater crocodile was around 3-4 years old. Since the water in rivers are gradually declining, such incidents of crocodiles coming onto land are common," said forest range officer V P Subramaniam.
Villagers in the vicinity were sensitised to alert the forest personnel if they spot crocodiles.
