Trichy: CPM functionaries and locals on Saturday laid siege to the office of the Andanallur BDO near Trichy, seeking a proper road to access a crematorium for rural people belonging to scheduled castes. The protesters forced officials, along with the engineering department of the DRDA, to commence preliminary road work on Saturday.
Protesters said that Kodiyalam residents demanded a proper road to carry the mortal remains of deceased residents of Sappani Koil Street area. While the demand went unaddressed for years, CPM claimed that a private person attempted to encroach the space meant for a road to access the cremation site.
CPM district executive committee member P Lenin said that the road was not redeveloped for 15 years. "Though a tender for a new road was floated, encroachers are hindering the work. Officials became mute spectators and are not commencing the road work," Lenin said.
