Cong gets Karur, but no clarity on candidate

Trichy: Congress party has managed to retain the Karur Lok Sabha constituency for the second time in the DMK alliance to field its candidate in the 2024 parliamentary elections. As soon as the seat-sharing pact between the DMK and Congress was announced on Monday afternoon, speculation was rife about the candidature to Karur constituency.While sitting MP S Jothimani was touted to be the candidate for the Karur constituency for the second consecutive time, a section of Congress functionaries was of the opinion that she may not be the option of the party this time.All-India Congress Committee (AICC) member ‘Bank’ K Subramanian and his supporters exuded confidence of getting the seat for him. “I am also seeking ticket to contest this time as Jothimani is not respecting any senior leaders citing her proximity to Rahul Gandhi,” alleged Subramanian. The rift in the Congress party in Karur had already come out on February 12, after Subramani and his supporters convened a meeting and passed a resolution against Jothimani that she should not be given the ticket this time. Subramani, who unsuccessfully contested against former AIADMK minister M R Vijayabaskar in Karur assembly constituency in 2016, criticized the 48-year-old woman MP for ‘disrespecting’ the functionaries of the party.Karur Lok Sabha constituency consists of Vedasandur in Dindigul, Aravakurichi, Karur, Krishnarayapuram in Karur, Manapparai in Trichy and Viralimalai in Pudukkottai. It maybe recalled that in 2019, the DMK had allotted the Karur parliamentary constituency seat to the Congress. Jothimani, who was fielded by the Congress in Karur, won by securing 695,697 votes after defeating AIADMK’s three-time Karur MP M Thambidurai who secured 275,151 votes.Repeated attempts to contact Jothimani went in vain.
