Cash stolen from Mutt hundi
Trichy: Burglars struck at Ragavendra Mutt in Thiruvanaikovil in Trichy city and decamped with hundi cash on Sunday midnight.
A stainless steel pot converted as the hundi was broke open by the burglars and the cash estimated to be around Rs 15,000 was taken away. The Srirangam police got a complaint on Monday morning from the mutt administrators about the burglary.
Inspector of police (crime) Sindhunathi visited the spot and enquired with the employees of the mutt. The enquiry revealed that the main entrance of the mutt would remain open always. The devotees of Ragavendra would visit the mutt for prayers. The sanctum sanctorum of the mutt was kept locked and the hundi was kept inside the room.
The burglars gained entry into the mutt and broke open the lock of the sanctum sanctorum before breaking the hundi which was not protected with a lock, said the inspector.
The police said that the watchman posted for the security of the mutt was on duty outside the building. The police could not get the fingerprint of the accused as the mutt premises was cleaned by the employees before the police arrived at the spot for the investigation.
The police registered a case and took up the investigation.
