TRICHY: Four people, including a toddler and a woman, were killed on the spot after their car rammed a parked lorry near Konalai on Trichy-Chennai Highway on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as S Natchathira Rajan, 60, a businessman from SS Colony in Madurai, wife N Suganthi, 55, son N Vinoth, 35, and one-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter V Abi.
Daughter-in-law V Deepa Priyadharshni, 30, who sustained injuries, was rushed to a private hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment. The family was on its way to Puducherry.
Police said Vinoth, who was driving the car, lost control of the vehicle when they were approaching Konalai near Siruganur around 1.30 pm, and rammed the rear of a timber-laden lorry parked by the roadside. The driver of the lorry, which was proceeding to Kancheepuram from Thoothukudi, was having lunch at an eatery nearby.
District superintendent of police T Senthilkumar, deputy superintendent of police Natarajan and two teams of police from Siruganur and Samayapuram headed by Prabakar and Gnanavel respectively rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies and sent them to Srirangam Government Hospital for post mortem. They also rescued Deepa Priyadharshni and sent her to a private hospital in the city.
Siruganur police have registered a case and are investigating.
