Trichy: The Trichy Mahila Court on Friday sentenced a 27-year-old man to life imprisonment on charges of dowry harassment and abetting the suicide of his wife in 2010. The father and brother of the man were also awarded 13 years of imprisonment.

I Muruganandham, 27, married S Chitra, 25, of Thanjavur, in 2003. A resident of Thiruverumbur, Muruganandham was living with his wife in a house in the same locality. The birth of a daughter in 2010 rocked the marriage life of the couple. Muruganandham often picked up quarrel with Chitra and demanded to bring more dowries from her parents' house.

Chitra informed her parents about the harassment she was undergoing not only from her husband but also from her father-in-law Idumban and brother-in-law Manikandan. But her parents failed to intervene and solve the problem faced by Chitra. Unable to bear the harassment, Chitra committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan using a sari in her house in 2010.

The Thiruverumbur police registered a case and arrested Muruganandham, Idumban and Manikandan. When the case came up for hearing at the Trichy Mahila court on Friday, Judge Jacintha Martin convicted and sentenced Muruganandham to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of 500. Idumban and Manikandan were awarded 13 years of imprisonment.
