20 streets in Trichy tagged ‘litter-free’

TRICHY: In an initiative to encourage citizens to keep their

streets

clean, Trichy City Corporation (TCC) has identified 20 litter-free streets across the four zones in the city. Tagged as ‘litter-free’ with signage installed at the entrances of all the 20 streets, residents’ welfare association (RWA) of the respective streets were told to maintain and improve the cleanliness and litter-free status of the streets.


At a time when heaps of garbage appear in many parts of city, particularly in Cantonment area including Warners Road, WilliamsR, and Bhima Nagar, the city corporation admits that there are streets with zero litter as well. As a part of Swachh Survekshan 2019, which the city corporation has been focusing in a big way, the local body on Saturday identified 20 streets as ‘litter-free’. Officials said that sign boards have been installed in five streets in each of the four zones. “The tag ‘litter-free’ itself will serve as a catalyst for residents to keep their neighbourhoods clean. Residents and their welfare associations in the 20 streets will have to keep the good name,” N Ravichandran, commissioner and special officer, Trichy City Corporation told TOI.

RWAs in the 20 localities were encouraged to remain proactive in conducting cleanliness drives such as weekend cleanup and plogging by mobilsing residents. Even the sanitary workers in the area will be extra cautious in covering all houses under the door-to-door waste collection, officials said.

“Just tagging a street as ‘litter-free’ alone is not enough. The civic body must ensure that sanitary workers are covering all houses every morning,” L Vinayagamoorthy, resident of Ramalinga Nagar, which is identified as a litter-free street, said. Four streets outside the

However, on the contrary, several arterial streets in Cantonment and Karumandapam remain littered with food and plastic waste. Officials said that awareness would be stepped up in the streets which are vulnerable to littering.
