Trichy: An armed gang broke into the house of a gold trader, overpowered him, and looted around one kilogram of gold jewellery worth about Rs1.5 crore in Trichy on Saturday. Trichy city police have launched a massive manhunt for the perpetrators.
The victim, Uday, originally from Maharashtra, runs a gold assaying and hallmarking business near Periya Chetti Street. According to police, robbers broke into his house in the street around 11am. They held him at gunpoint, tied him up, and confined him inside the bathroom. They then ransacked the premises, scattering household items, and fled with around one kilogram of gold jewellery and ornaments.
The crime came to light when an employee working at Uday's business arrived at the house later. He was shocked to find the place in disarray and his employer locked and tied up in the toilet. The boy immediately raised an alarm, alerting neighbours and police.
Fort Crime police are investigating the incident. City police commissioner N Kamini told TOI that two special teams have been formed to apprehend the suspects. They are examining CCTV footage from the locality and questioning locals. No arrests have been made so far. The assailants are believed to have had prior information about the presence of gold at the residence.
