Women’s commissions are not against men, but anti-women attitudes: Satheedevi
Thiruvananthapuram: Women's commissions are not institutions that are antagonistic to men, said Kerala women's commission chairperson P Satheedevi on Wednesday.Speaking at the inauguration of a Posh Act 2013 awareness class organized for Technopark employees, Satheedevi stated that women's commissions stand against anti-women attitudes. "In dowry harassment complaints, women are often the ones who face charges. There are cases against them too. When laws are made to take action against those with anti-women attitudes, the women's commission ensures that women receive the protection of these laws," she said.In a male-dominated society, equality cannot be achieved just because it is written in the Constitution, she added."Recognizing this, the framers of the Constitution included the third subsection in Article 15, which empowers Parliament and legislatures to make necessary laws to address any form of exploitation or discrimination faced by a section of society," she said, adding that women's commissions were established at national and state levels based on that."Employment Guarantee Act was introduced by Parliament when it was believed that women were not even capable of plucking grass in their yards. Back then, even women doubted this. However, today, through this scheme, women have gained the confidence that they can contribute to the country's development," she said."The archaic view that women should stay at home has changed. Women have proven that they can do any job. At the same time, violence and exploitation against women are still prevalent," she added.Kadakampally Surendran, MLA, Technopark CEO Sanjeev Nair, women's commission member Indira Ravindran, director Shaji Sugunan, law officer K Chandrashobha, project officer N Divya and research officer AR Archana also spoke.
