Vessel bound for Saudi Arabia docks at Kollam
T'puram: Amid the continuing conflict in the Middle East, Zaki Vision – a Hong Kong-based offshore support vessel – docked at Kollam port on Monday morning after it was forced to change its route. Port officials said the vessel, sailing under the Saint Kitts and Nevis flag, was heading to Saudi Arabia when rising tensions in the Gulf amid the war in Iran prompted the crew to seek safe docking at Kollam.Kollam port officer Ranjith MJ's office said the ship, used as a support vessel for maritime offshore works, sought permission to berth at the port on Sunday. The development comes amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region that disrupted airspace and maritime movement, with several international flights being cancelled and shipping routes facing heightened security risks.
The port officer told TOI that the ship's agency contacted his office while the vessel was on its way to Saudi Arabia. Customs and immigration authorities gave clearance and the port granted permission for the vessel to dock at Kollam. The agency agreed to bear the docking charges prescribed by the govt. The ship has 12 crew members onboard and authorities instructed them not to disembark, he added."The exact duration of their stay has not been decided. We believe they may stay for five days and informed the ship's agency about the charges fixed by the govt for docking, which they agreed to. Owners do not want to drift or slow steam in the Gulf mainly to avoid expenditure on fuel and lubes. For them staying in a port is cheaper," he said.Ranjith said port authorities verified the vessel's documents and insurance papers before granting permission. "The crew must not disembark and locals cannot board the vessel. If the crew has requirements, they must contact their agency, which will coordinate with us," he said.Zaki Vision is an offshore support vessel that assists oil and gas exploration and offshore maritime operations by transporting equipment and personnel, supplying offshore rigs and supporting subsea construction and maintenance works.Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Holi wishes, messages and quotes !
