Two wanted criminals arrested from Vellanad

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Aryanad police on Sunday morning arrested two notorious goons from Vellanad in an attempted murder case, and also for assaulting police. The accused are also wanted in other cases registered at the Mangalapuram police station.
The arrested are Shafeeq (26), a native of Paychira near Andoorkonam, and Abin (25) from Kaniyapuram. Abin is accused in a case related to throwing firecrackers at the Mangalapuram police while resisting arrest, while Shafeeq is wanted in an attempted murder case registered at the same police station.The two, who have been absconding since Friday, were hiding at an under-construction house owned by one Sreekumaran Nair at Valiyara near Vellanad. On Sunday morning, when Sreekumaran Nair reached the house to water the concrete, he found two men sleeping there. When questioned, they gave strange answers. Shafeeq attacked him when he tried to call the police.
Shafeeq smashed him on the face and later hit him on the head using a stone. He even pushed him into a well and repeatedly kicked him when he tried to escape. A woman who saw the incident alerted the local people. The people caught the two criminals and handed them over to the police. Sreekumaran Nair is the brother of the special secretary of the chief minister.
Abin and Shafeeq were admitted to the Medical College hospital as they suffered injuries in the scuffle with the residents.
Shafeeq and his brother Shameer are accused in a case registered by Mangalapuram police for attempting to murder a person over financial dispute. When the police arrived at their home in Paychira to arrest them on Friday, Shameer threw firecrackers at them, and their mother, Sheeja threw an axe at them. Shameer’s friend Abin, who was also present at that time, escaped after throwing firecrackers at the police. Shafeeq was not at the house at that time.
