was arrested by the city police here on Tuesday for allegedly creating a

ruckus

inside the city police commissioner’s office under the influence of alcohol.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 6.30pm. Kamal was with the two female students of the

University College

, Asmitha Kabir and Surya Gayathri, who had earlier levelled moral policing allegations against

SFI

activists of the college. The group was there to meet the commissioner in person and express their grievance about the seemingly casual way the police were treating their complaint.

Besides Kamal, the students were also accompanied by their mothers and

‘’As the meeting was progressing, he suddenly started speaking in a provocative manner, using abusive words,” said commissioner G Sparjan Kumar. As his tantrums went overboard, the commissioner expelled him from the office room. However, after getting out, the controversial

started venting his anger on the commissioner’s gunman and the senior police officers, including Cantonment assistant commissioner K E Baiju, who were there to attend a meeting called by the commissioner.

Following this, he was taken into custody .

Shajahan told the officers present that he did not know Kamal personally and was meeting him for the first time. Asmitha Kabir told TOI that they too did not know him personally.

“When there was a move by the police to slap sedition charges on him over one of his works, we had declared our solidarity with him. Today he came to meet us to return the favour,” said Asmitha.

The two young women had complained that despite facing physical assault from the SFI activists, the police had not taken any action against the accused. They were at the commissioner’s office to file another detailed complaint expressing this grievance.

The police have booked Kamal under Sections 353 (obstruction of duty) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to public servant) of IPC. He was produced before the court in the night itself. tnn
