THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The migrant labourers, who have been badly hit with the demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, were relieved on Sunday when they turned up at SBI's statue branch here to send money to their dear ones.

The bank has opened a separate help desk for migrant labourers. Any amount can be deposited and up to Rs 10,000 can be withdrawn by the migrant workers through this help desk. Also, they can avail change for up to Rs 4,000 in exchange for their Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

"I suffered a loss of Rs 1,600 in the past two days, since I had to skip work as I went to several bank branches to get cash. Today I came to know about the help desk at SBI and was able to withdraw cash without any difficulty," said

A few of his friends from Assam were not able to have proper food for the past two days as they did not have sufficient cash with them, said Raj

The help desk at the SBI in Statue runs smoothly with ample support from retired officers and drivers who work at the bank.

Lottery vendor duped with copy of 2,000 : A lottery vendor was reportedly duped with photostat copies of Rs2,000 currency at Chirayinkeezhu here on Sunday. According to the complaint received at Chirayinkeezhu police station, Sudevan, a lottery vendor sold lottery ticket worth Rs100 to two people in front of SBI ATM at Chirayinkeezhu.

The duo handed out a Rs2,000 note and Sudevan gave a balance of Rs1,900. He then took it to a beverages outlet where he was told that the currency was fake.

Sudevan later approached the manager of SBT who confirmed that the note was a copy of Rs2,000. Sajeesh H L, station house officer, Chirayinkeezhu, said that the culprits have not been identified and that a case has been registered.
