the ray classic, charulatha, will lead the screening, corporation managing director n. vasudevan said. the films include paroma, directed by aparna sen, and kairee by amol palekar. in thayi saheba, kasaravalli captures the profound impact the history and socio-political changes would have on the inner world of one woman, narmada. the juxtaposition of the outer world, the public sphere, and the internal world, the private cosmos, are done within the framework of history. the advent of a new social order after india's independence poses great challenges, which enable narmada to move towards self-discovery. the film stars jayamala and suresh heblikar. munnudi delves into the socio-psychological ramifications of an abominable custom prevalent in muthuchera, a tiny seaside village which draws arabian traders. the traders arrive during a particular season and acquire temporary wives, taking advantage of abject poverty prevalent in the area. the women are divorced within a few months and the itinerant arabs disappear leaving behind, probably, a pregnant woman. these women have nothing else to look forward to except another arab the next season. the cast includes tara and h.g. dattatreya. veedu, a tamil film by balu mahendra, is a kafkaesque story of a hapless woman employee in chennai. every urban employee can identify himself/herself with the theme.
