Now, watch world cinema every week
Thiruvananthapuram: Movie buffs need not wait for a whole year to watch renowned world cinema at international film festival of Kerala held annually in the city. Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC) has come up with a project to arrange weekly screening of world cinema here.
As a first step, KSFDC will prepare a database of movie buffs interested to watch world cinema. Using the database, a club will be formed and members can watch movies paying a fee.
“Apart from the film festival (which is open only for registered delegates), many people do not have any platform to watch world cinema. Films associations normally use DVDs when they conduct movie screening in the city; this is not a professional approach. Our idea is to give a theatre experience with proper sound system to the audience. A person could watch around 12 films at Rs 900 for three months,” said Shaji N Karun, chairman of KSFDC.
In the first phase, the film screening will be arranged for three months on every Sunday at 10.30am. The films will be screened at a KSFDC theatre in Thiruvananthapuram.
Shoplifters (Japan) directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, The Guilty (Denmark) directed by Gustav Moller, Loveless (Russia) directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev and Yomeddine (Egypt) directed by A B Shawky are among the films that will be screened in the first phase. Also, there will be films screened at Cannes, Berlin and Sundance film festivals.
The organizers plan to collect well-known world cinemas from authorised distributors in the country for the screening. “Only films certified by censor board will be screened. Any decision on the future of the project will be based on the number of registration and response from the audience,” Karun added.
The database created for the project may be used to form a club for movie buffs in future. And it is planned to extend the project to other districts based on demand.
Interested people may send their name, date of birth, address and phone number to ksfdcworldcinema@gmail.com before November 15.
