Motorist killed in a bid to save jaywalker

Thiruvananthapuram: Jaywalking by a pedestrian cost a motorist his life as the latter crashed his bike into a wall near Kazhakkoottam Railway station Road on Thursday morning. The deceased has been identified as Harikumar (53), a resident of Payattuvila in Balaramapuram, who ran a homestay.

According to Thumba police, the victim, in a bid to save a walker who was crossing the road while talking on phone, lost control of the vehicle and rammed the wall. “The mishap occurred near Saji Hospital, Kazhakkoottam. Harikumar was heading to Kulathoor from Kazhakkoottam after shopping,” said an officer.

The victim who sustained severe injuries on his head, face, arms and legs in the impact was rushed to Medical College Hospital here, where he was declared dead.

“We have registered a case under section 304 A of IPC (causing death due to negligence) as per witness account. The autopsy procedures will be held on Friday,” the officer added.

Harikumar leaves behind wife Ambily and daughters Sreepriya and Sreelekshmy.
