More than 300 films to be screened at IDSFFK

Thiruvananthapuram: More than 300 films from across the globe will be screened on the 15th edition of the International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK), organized by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy. The festival will feature films from budding filmmakers to legendary veterans of the field. The festival will be held from August 4 to 9 at the Kairali Sree Nila theatres from 9am in Thampanoor.Films from different parts of the globe such as Iran, Canada, Portugal, and Korea will be featured. Sixty-three competition films will be featured including those from the state of Manipur.This year’s Lifetime Achievement award will be given to veteran filmmaker Deepa Dhanraj. Known for her intersectional approach, her extensive filmography raises questions related to women’s health, political participation and resistance, education, and human rights. ‘We have not come here to die’ (2019), an inspection into the caste system in India after the institutional murder of the dalit scholar Rohit Vermula, is one of her most recent and notable works.The award will be presented by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan at the closing ceremony to be held on August 9.RV Ramani will be the filmmaker in focus at this year’s festival. His documentaries have gained worldwide recognition for their unique style. His national award-winning 2019 film ‘Oh, that’s Bhanu’, based on the late dancer and theater artist Bhanumati Rao, will be screened along with 10 other films.Five works from Oscar-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto are included in this year’s festival. Sakamoto, after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, has become an iconic figure in Japan’s movement against nuclear power.It will also celebrate MT Vasudevan Nair and two documentaries on him will be screened.
