Man killed as bus rams shop
Attingal: A 48-year-old man was killed and his 13-year-old son suffered injuries in a freak mishap after a KSRTC bus rammed a roadside vegetable shop at Nedumangad outside the city on Thursday.
K Chandran of Sheeba Bhavan, Perayam, near Palode is the deceased. He was running a hair salon at Palode. His son, Aromal, has been admitted in Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital and is out of danger.
The accident occurred around 4.30pm on Thathancode-Kollamkavu Road near Nedumangad. The father and son were buying vegetables from the shop when the KSRTC bus conducting service between Vithura and Nedumangad suddenly rammed the shop.
Chandran and Aromal had stopped their scooter in front of the shop and were buying vegetables when the bus rammed them. Chandran suffered deep injuries on his head and chest. Though he was rushed to the Medical College Hospital, he was declared dead on arrival. Aromal has sustained fractures on right hand and minor injuries on head and toe.
“The driver of the bus told us that he lost control of the vehicle when he was trying to overtake another vehicle in the front. But witnesses have contradicted his statement saying that there were no vehicles in front of the bus,” said Nedumangad sub-inspector Sunil Gopi, hinting that the driver could have dozed off while driving. Chandran’s body would be released to the family on Friday after conducting post-mortem examination.
The bus also damaged four two wheelers that were parked in front of the shop. This include Chandran’s scooter as well as the shopkeeper’s motorcycle.
Nedumangad police have booked the bus driver Kamal Raj attached to Vithura depot under the sections, 304 A (negligence causing death) and 279 (rash driving) of IPC.
As per police data, there had been as many as 379 accident cases reported in the state this year up to May in which KSRTC buses were involved. As many as 97 people were killed in those accidents and 246 people were left with grievous injuries.
